Old connectors also deserve attention. Oxidized contacts, weakened spring contacts, or overheated terminal strips can lead to sporadic errors. Weak flipper fingers, sluggish kickers, worn bumpers, or stiff ball ejection mechanisms rob a fast-paced Williams game of much of its dynamism.

Often, the machine’s original performance can be restored through a thorough overhaul. This includes cleaning the mechanics and replacing worn sleeves, plungers, links, springs, and stops. Coils should not be lubricated internally. Oil and grease attract dirt and can cause a plunger to operate even more sluggishly. A dry, clean, and properly assembled coil mechanism is generally the better solution.

For System 11 machines, sound, display, and driver electronics must also be taken into account. The WPC platform underwent gradual development. Some early machines still used alphanumeric displays, while later games were equipped with dot-matrix displays. Sound technology, safety features, driver boards, and pinball controls also changed over the years.

Therefore, the designation “WPC” alone is not sufficient for selecting specific electronic parts. A distinction should be made as to whether the machine is, for example, an early WPC model, a WPC-89, a WPC-DCS, a WPC-Security, or a WPC-95.

Many mechanical wear parts, on the other hand, are similar or identical across multiple WPC titles. Nevertheless, the part number should be checked. Williams used different coils, springs, plungers, and other components depending on the load, installation position, and desired force.

Distinguishing Between Williams and Bally

A step-by-step approach has proven effective: First, address safety-related and electrical issues. Next, tackle the mechanics and wear parts. Finally, work on the playfield, plastics, cabinet, and cosmetic details.

Removed original parts should be kept even if modern replacement parts are installed. This allows for a future return to the original configuration.
